MISSION statement:

We are a group of Catholics, some of whom are ordained, brought together by our love of Christ's Church and our anxiety about its future. Still inspired by the Second Vatican Council, we want to contribute fully to the life of our Church so that we may be a more effective sign of the Kingdom of God. To do this, we believe that an atmosphere of openness and dialogue both with each other and with our church leadership needs developing. Accordingly, we aim to supply channels of free and frank communication. We desire to help create a climate of trust and respect for all where this dialogue may be fostered.

THEOLOGY statement:

ACTA is a movement built from below by clergy and laity alike in every diocese in England and Wales. It exists to give those people an effective voice. It is an instrument to establish and promote space for a trusting dialogue within a hierarchically structured people’s Church.

ACTA believes that the reforms of the Second Vatican Council are the only way forward for mission to modern society. It is not a small chapel of selected followers; it believes in the Church as a “big tent”, with open doors. As a free and representative association of believers, it seeks to liberate the expertise in the ranks, so as to bring added energy and witness to the Church in the world.

Happy New Year 2014

A very Happy New Year to everyone – to all our supporters, members and friends, to our Diocesan Co-ordinators and Delegates and to friends on the ACTA Leadership Team. I hope you have all enjoyed a peaceful and joyful time over the Christmas break and are happily getting back in harness, feeling refreshed.

There is an exciting campaign going on about the Mass translation imposed on us all two years ago. In the Tablet for January 9th 2014 you can see the editorial “A Translation with Proven Flaws” and under Home News you can read Sarah MacDonald and Christopher Lamb’s article “Review of Missal Translation promised as disquiet grows”.

ACTA is involved in this initiative. Chris Lamb quotes from a letter sent by ACTA to the Conference of Catholic Bishops of England and Wales in mid-December.  Here is the whole text of our letter- written by myself and edited by members of the NDC media sub-committee and sent on behalf of the ACTA Leadership Team. Archbishop Vincent sent us a kindly (if non-committal) reply on Christmas Eve.

Liam Hayes Research

Written by: Liam Hayes
Published: 23 December 2013

I would like to express my sincere thanks for all the help and support offered to me earlier this year in the promotion and distribution of my PhD research questionnaire.

The response rate has been very positive indeed. I have started my analysis of the research data which is providing some very interesting results and considered reflections from across the catholic community - indeed many of the extended responses are both moving, inspiring and challenging for us all as church.

I hope to publish my findings later next year - so watch this space!
With my thanks
Wishing you and yours a Peaceful Christmas and much happiness in the New Year.

ACTA National Delegate Council (NDC) meeting

Written by: Jean Riordan

NEWS - ACTA National Delegate Council (NDC) meeting
22nd-23rd November 2013, Hinsley Hall in Leeds.

The NDC passed a resolution about membership which is in line with the Interim Constitution. It establishes what is, effectively, a federal structure with individual supporters becoming members of their Diocesan Groups and the affiliated Diocesan Groups themselves being the members ('Member Organisations') of the national organisation. In this structure, the Diocesan Groups are the primary operational units of the organisation, with the national body being an umbrella organisation which is representative of, and responsible to those Groups. This model allows for great autonomy in individual dioceses. There are some key questions which remain to be answered and a sub-committee has been formed to consider these issues in depth, reporting back for decisions to be made at the next Council meeting in May 2104.

Conference Speakers

Written by: Jean Riordan
Published: 17 November 2013

Thank you to all the people at our National Conference who asked for transcripts of the speakers' talks. You can find Gerry'J Hughes SJ's talk "Where do we go from here" in the documents section of this web-site. Professor John Sullivan's talk is there too, but the title has been changed to "Being a Citizen in the Church" - the Talk is exactly what he said at Newman University - the editor of the Furrow is publishing it in their December issue and has kindly allowed us to put it up now. Professor King did not give us a transcript unfortunately but  you might like to look up an excellent extended interview with her at

www.heacadamy.ac.uk

If you goolge, Ursula King that interview is very near the top of the page, and it covers many of the things she spoke about in her talk as well as giving you references to where else you can find her work.
