MISSION statement: Revised 2026

We are a group of Catholics, some of whom are ordained, brought together by our love of Christ’s Church and a desire to be part of the synodal renewal it needs.

Inspired by the legacy of the Second Vatican Council, and the call to Synodality for the Church of the third millennium, we want to contribute fully to the life of our Church so that it may be a more effective and inclusive sign of the Kingdom of God.

To enable this, we wish to promote listening, dialogue and receptivity within the Church, and with all people of good will, open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Accordingly, we aim to facilitate opportunities to share experiences, practices and insights to discern our hopes and aims for the Church in the world today.

THEOLOGY statement:

ACTA is a movement built from below by clergy and laity alike in every diocese in England and Wales. It exists to give those people an effective voice. It is an instrument to establish and promote space for a trusting dialogue within a hierarchically structured people’s Church.

ACTA believes that the reforms of the Second Vatican Council are the only way forward for mission to modern society. It is not a small chapel of selected followers; it believes in the Church as a “big tent”, with open doors. As a free and representative association of believers, it seeks to liberate the expertise in the ranks, so as to bring added energy and witness to the Church in the world.

Sometimes people you have never met face to face have an influence in your life that is hard to measure.

It might be a family member, maybe a great Grandma, who died before you were born but whose name and life has run bright as oral DNA through the thread of your family tree, always talked about, respected and held in high regard, especially as an example to young ones. Their influence pervades our lives even though our times are very different. Pointers and patterns remain.

Hey you, stop being so critical!

Words are funny things. We all use them, with varying degrees of success, to communicate with each other. Sometimes when we use them in a careless or slipshod manner, their meaning becomes confused and misunderstandings easily occur.

One such word is ‘critical’.

My people are suffering

As we celebrated the entry of the Lord into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday, the week before Easter, a Coptic Church in the Nile Delta in Egypt was bombed and many killed. They left their homes to attend church, to begin the days of Holy Week leading to the Triduum. Those that did return home had experienced the shock of an indiscriminate terrorist attack that took the lives of their friends that Sunday morning. This, and a further attack later in Alexandria , was claimed by ISIS as their work, their way of spreading fear and uncertainty in a troubled world.

Pope Francis meets with married priests

The Pope opens the door a little further for married priests

Written by: Alex Walker
Published: 16 March 2017
On March 8, a German newspaper published an interview with Pope Francis in which he commented again on the possibility of opening priestly ordination to "viri probati" or "proven men."  While stating that optional celibacy is not a possibility, Pope Francis indicated that ordaining married men in remote places where there are too few priests may be a possibility.
