MISSION statement: Revised 2026

We are a group of Catholics, some of whom are ordained, brought together by our love of Christ’s Church and a desire to be part of the synodal renewal it needs.

Inspired by the legacy of the Second Vatican Council, and the call to Synodality for the Church of the third millennium, we want to contribute fully to the life of our Church so that it may be a more effective and inclusive sign of the Kingdom of God.

To enable this, we wish to promote listening, dialogue and receptivity within the Church, and with all people of good will, open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit.

Accordingly, we aim to facilitate opportunities to share experiences, practices and insights to discern our hopes and aims for the Church in the world today.

THEOLOGY statement:

ACTA is a movement built from below by clergy and laity alike in every diocese in England and Wales. It exists to give those people an effective voice. It is an instrument to establish and promote space for a trusting dialogue within a hierarchically structured people’s Church.

ACTA believes that the reforms of the Second Vatican Council are the only way forward for mission to modern society. It is not a small chapel of selected followers; it believes in the Church as a “big tent”, with open doors. As a free and representative association of believers, it seeks to liberate the expertise in the ranks, so as to bring added energy and witness to the Church in the world.

A New Lectionary - Thomas O'Loughlin

A New Lectionary: is it a matter of picking a version? By Thomas O’Loughlin Introduction The Tablet recently reported that the Australian bishops are now – like so many other English-language episcopal conferences – thinking about a new translation of the scriptures for use in the liturgy. This is a process that is commonly, but inaccurately, referred to as having ‘a new lectionary.’ In this debate there will be shouts from many sides in this form: ‘I am for Jerusalem Bible!’ I am for English Standard Version!’ ‘I am for formal equivalence!’ or ‘I am for inclusive language!’ It is all reminiscent of Corinth in the mid-first century CE and disputes about the baptism of Paul and that of Apollos. But is there a more basic question to answer? The debate about ‘which version’ – for all its validity – distracts everyone (bishops included) from recognising many other real problems that reading the scriptures in a lectionary poses. With all the focus on ‘which translation,’ we are missing the bigger issue. Do we need more than one translation?

The New Lectionary with Liz Dodd

The Bishops’ Conferences of England and Wales and Scotland have chosen a new Bible translation for use at Mass that translates women out of Scripture.  Does this matter, and how do we respond?

In a 25 minute talk, Liz Dodd (Home News Editor at the Tablet) guided us through all the issues surrounding the New Lectionary, allowing time for reflection followed by lively group discussion and questions.

Bio: Liz Dodd is a journalist and travel writer for publications including National Geographic Traveller (UK) and The Guardian. A theology graduate, she is a Candidate with the Sisters of St Joseph of Peace, and has circumnavigated the globe on a bicycle.

This week will see that last of the Universe and Catholic Times being produced. Falls in sales due to the pandemic has caused this. We are grateful to Chris McDonnell for providing us with his weekly column for the Catholic Times. We hope Chris will continue to make the occasional offering for this site.

There are many gathering places that offer natural opportunities
for meeting one another, opportunities for the social contact that has been absent in recent weeks and months. Maybe it is worth reflecting on what we have missed as we gradually shift towards renewing old customs and habits.

It has become apparent just how much we value our local pub as an important aspect of our social life, to the extent that we understand ‘the local’ as clearly indicating the nearby pub. It is a place where we gather with friends for a social chat and a pint, where we are known by the bar staff and are missed if we are absent. Often a particular table or corner seat is known by the name of its regular occupant-‘that’s Jack’s seat by the window’. It is a place where we feel at ease, a place of relaxation.
