Letter to Diocesan Coordinators / Delegates \;

The Board of Trustees of ACTA met e arlier this week to set the date for the Annual General Meeting. \; It will be held at 7.30pm on Sunday 6th July 2025. Part of our discussion at the T rustees’ meeting was about the future of ACTA in a synodal Church. It is a debate that is likely to shape part of the discussion that we have at the AGM.

ACTA was established\, by a group of clergy\, to advocate fo r a more inclusive\, consultative Church. That was some 13 years ago and m uch has changed. The election and pontificate of Francis has given a new i mpetus for a Church that more closely represents the sensus fidei fidelium [ the sense of the faith of the faithful]. The election of Leo XIV would seem to guarantee a continuation of this momentum.

What is ACTA fo r in a synodal Church? In the last few years\, we have brought to our memb ership key speakers on various aspects of the synodal process [ from Dr Ph yllis Zagano to Bishop Nicholas Hudson]. We have produced executive summar ies of Vatican documents in the belief that all Catholics had a right to a ccess the thinking of the Church on matters that affect them.

We s eem to be at a cross-roads – moving from learning about synodality to impl ementing its message\, from initiating discussions to measuring the impact of the changes we expect to see.

Before the AGM I would welcome t he chance to discuss these issues with diocesan coordinators. For some dio ceses\, there has been little to report. That is less important than recog nising the work that we might need to undertake in the months ahead as we collaborate across diocesan boundaries to make synodality a part of the li ved reality of Catholics across England and Wales \; \;
